How To Sleep Better In The Summer Heat?

Although we all enjoy summer, and summer vacations, dealing with the summer heat on a daily basis can be exhausting. Which means, getting the best sleep possible to restore your energy is very important! But, we all know that’s easier said than done on a hot summer night.

Sometimes, the heat is so unbearable that you can’t sleep at all. So, how do you get the much-deserved rest during summer nights? Here are a few tips and tricks to help you sleep better in the summer heat:

How To Sleep Better In Summer Heat

1. Make The Most Of Your Bedsheets

Your bedsheets can add up to the heat in the warm summer nights – but not all of them. Forget about silks and polyester when the summer heat is getting to you, and instead use cotton bedsheets to keep yourself cool during the night. Cotton bedsheets provide better airflow, which makes them more breathable than any other material, making them perfect for hot summer nights.

If you feel like simply swapping to cotton bedsheets doesn’t do the trick for you, then you can also try the “Egyptian method”. Dampen your cotton cover, or towel with cold water, and cover yourself with it over the night. Don’t forget to place a towel beneath you as well, to prevent your mattress from getting wet.

2. Cotton Pajamas Are A Must Have

Speaking of cotton bedsheets, it would be wise to choose loose cotton pajamas to sleep in. Although it might be hard for you to sleep in pajamas during the summer, pajamas help to soak up sweat, and their softness allows you to fall asleep more easily.

3. Use Your Freezer Wisely

Speaking of getting yourself cool, it’s time to use the coldest place in your home to your advantage – the freezer. Even though when the heat is up, sleeping in the freezer doesn’t seem like a bad idea, we had other tips for you! Before you go to bed, place your bedsheets in the freezer for half an hour to cool off. Remember to place them in a plastic bag first, to avoid any smells from the freezer getting on your sheets. Although this won’t last for the whole night, it will keep you cool enough to at least fall asleep faster.

But, that’s not all! If you have a hot water bottle that you use during the winter, then it’s time to do the reverse and cool yourself in the summer. In the morning, before you go to work, fill it with water and place it in the freezer. Then all you have to do is get it out before you go to bed and snuggle with it all night long to get yourself cooling comfort in your bed.

4. Get Low

When the heat rises up, it’s quite literal. The hot air, goes up, while the colder air stays down. Use this to your advantage, and place your bed as low as you can to the ground to keep yourself cooler. If you have a house with multiple floors, then move to the ground floor and sleep there, to avoid overheating during the night.

5. Be Careful Of What You Eat

Having a large meal, right before you go to bed will make you overheat very easily – especially in the summer. That doesn’t mean that you have to skip dinner – just that you have to be wiser about it. Instead of eating a heavy meal for dinner, eat something lighter. Then, make sure that your dinner is between 2-4 hours before you go to sleep so that you can sleep more peacefully over the night and you don’t overheat.

6. Get A Cold Bath

Before you go to sleep, lower your body temperature by having a cold bath. That doesn’t mean that you should be getting yourself into freezing water, because that will wake you up instead of helping you sleep. All you need to do is to take a cold bath with water temperature lower than your body temperature. Read more here.
